Why Prints Matter

How do we connect with previous generations? How do we know what our grandparents looked like when they were young? How do we know how their grandparents lived?

The only reason we know anything about how our previous generations lived, what they wore and who they were, is because they printed their pictures. Maybe they were put into an album, or maybe the collected dust in a show box stored away in a closet somewhere.

But at some point, that album or that show box was found. The pictures were examined, looked at and the eyes of the viewer lit up when reality hit them.

This is my great-grandma!

Oh my gosh, look at that dress.

Oh wow, look at that old car grandpa used to drive. So cool!

How do I know these are accurate reactions? Because they are the reactions I had when I found an old photo album that my grandpa had put together at one point. With pictures from the 1800s!!!! There were pictures in there of old relatives I had never heard of. And yet I recognized them. I could see my mom in some of my great, great aunt’s faces. I could find similarities between myself and some of those relatives. This wouldn’t have been possible without printed products. Those images would’ve been long lost since then.

In today’s society we get so caught up in the instant gratification. Upload a picture to Facebook, check for likes and comments. Snap a picture on the phone because the baby is doing a funny face, or the dog is look extra cute today. Images that are taken of moments we wanted to preserve, but then forgotten and never looked at again. Because, let’s be real, who has time to scroll through 100s of pictures on the phone or find that one post on Facebook you posted 3 years ago?

That’s where photographer’s have a responsibility to our clients to give them printed products. It’s our responsibility as photographers to make sure the images we capture, the moments and memories we photograph, are preserved in albums and wall art, easily located and relived by everyone.

Our clients don’t have time to design an album, find the right company with the right quality products, and then place the order. They hired you to capture moments in their lives they thought deserved more than just a phone capture. Make sure those moments don’t end up forgotten like yesterday’s iPhone snap.

Do your clients a favor and let them walk home with their memories always safe and protected in printed products. Trust me, they’ll thank you later when they want to relive their wedding day or the infant stages of their now grown teenager that’s driving them up the wall.
