Why Photographic Prints Still Matter in the Digital Age

Written by: Camila Sanchez Checa

In an era where our phones are filled to the brim with thousands of digital images and social media feeds are constantly bombarded with new photos, you might wonder: "Are printed photographs still relevant?" It’s no secret that, here at UAF, we're passionate about preserving memories, and we firmly believe that photographic prints are not just relevant – they're essential. But why? Here are some reasons you might want to think about before throwing the idea of physical prints out the window.

Tangibility, emotional impact and mindful viewing

Isn’t there something truly magical about holding a printed photograph or album and looking through them? Unlike a fleeting image on a screen, something that we’re trained to scroll past, a physical print engages more of our senses. The texture of the paper, the weight of the frame or the book, and the ability to physically interact with the photo creates a more profound connection to the memory. This tangible quality that we can only find in prints, allows us to engage with our photos in a way that scrolling through our phones or computers simply can't match.

In the digital world we live in, we often scroll past hundreds, if not thousands, of images without giving them more than a passing glance. Could you describe the last 3 pictures you saw on social media or on your camera roll? Printed photographs, however, encourage us to slow down and truly absorb the moment that was captured. Whether it's a framed print on your wall or a beautifully crafted photo album, physical photos actually invite us to pause and appreciate the photo itself along with the memories it holds. Its through this type of viewing experience where we can feel stronger emotions and the feelings that the memory captured might invoke in us.

At UAF, we understand the power of these tangible memories. That's why we offer a wide range of high-quality printing options, from classic photo prints to stunning wall art and custom photo books.

Don’t we always print out our best photos for the best intented gifts?

Longevity and Preservation

While digital storage seems convenient, it comes with its own set of challenges and limitations. Haven’t you ever felt a little overwhelmed by the amount of images you have on your phone? That constant need to keep increasing your storage space to fit all these “incredible and one-a-kind” memories? Hard drives fail, cloud services can shut down, and file formats become obsolete. The filter through which we decide which moments we believe to be important and can’t be missed, becomes increasingly lenient as time goes on. Do you think you or your future kids could possibly be able to easily find one picture within the thousands you have?

In contrast, a well-preserved printed photograph can last for generations. Think about those treasured family photos passed down through the years – many of them are likely printed images that have stood the test of time. High-quality prints, when properly cared for, can outlast many of our current digital storage methods, ensuring that your most precious memories are securely preserved.

Decor and Personal Expression

Printed photographs offer a unique way to personalise your living space. A beautiful landscape on your wall, a collection of family portraits in the hallway, or a curated photo book on your coffee table (this last one is especially popular nowadays!) – these all add character to your home and reflect your family story. Unlike digital displays, which often cycle through images very quickly, printed photos become a constant presence in your daily life, constantly reminding you of cherished memories and loved ones.

What society believes to be “aesthetically pleasing” is constantly changing. Therefore, it’s important to encapsule your photos in a timeless way. Try scrolling through social media o websites like Pinterest to find a style that resonates with you and represents what you believe your style to be.

Gifting and Sharing

While sharing digital photos is easy, gifting a printed photograph or photo album adds a personal touch that digital photo just can't replicate. A carefully selected print, maybe in a beautiful frame or as part of a photo book, shows the thoughtfulness and effort that goes beyond just simply texting an image or tagging someone in a social media post. As the years go by, these things tend to lose meaning, making these tangible gifts, cherished keepsakes, often displayed proudly in homes, offices or really just about anywhere.

Creating a Legacy and the Joy of Rediscovery

Printed photographs play a crucial role in documenting and passing down family history. Future generations will have a much easier time exploring their history through physical photo albums and framed prints than by trying to access outdated digital files or long-forgotten online accounts. By printing your important photos, you're creating an actual legacy that can be easily shared and preserved.

Aside from that, there's definitely a unique joy that comes with stumbling upon an old photograph tucked away in a book or stored in a box. These encounters with printed images often bring back a flood of memories and emotions that we might have forgotten. Digital photos, hidden away in folders on our computers or in the cloud, rarely provide these moments of unexpected rediscovery, and therefore, leave those memories in the forgotten past.

It’s all about balancing Digital and Print

Of course, the digital age has brought incredible advancements to photography, and we're not suggesting you should print every single photo you take. The key is finding a balance. Use digital technology for its convenience in terms of capturing and storing large amount of images, but don't forget the value of printing those special photos that truly capture important moments, people, and places in your life.

In this digital age, photographic prints aren't just still relevant – they're a vital part of how we preserve, share, and relive our most precious moments. So, take a look through your digital albums today. Which memories deserve to be brought to print? Your future self (and future generations) will thank you for taking the time to print and preserve these memories.

Here at UAF, we're not just a printing service – we're memory keepers. We as a company and community, are committed to helping you bring your digital memories into the physical world. Whether it's through high-quality prints, beautifully crafted photo books, or other photo products, we believe in the enduring power of printed photographs to connect us with our memories and with each other.

The Top Culling and Editing Softwares for Photographers

As a professional photographer, having the right software tools can significantly streamline your post-production workflow. In this article, let's look over the four most popular culling and editing programs you can incorporate in your workflow today that can save you days at a time: Aftershoot, Narrative, Imagine AI and FilterPixel.

Aftershoot: The All-in-One Integrated Solution

Aftershoot combines AI culling and editing into a single integrated platform. Its culling software reviews your images and studies them, filtering to quickly sort through blurry images, shots with closed eyes, and duplicate photos. Its AI will also highlight what it thinks are the best images for you to use.

Similar to other softwares, Aftershoot also uses AI technology to provide automated editing. You can either create your own editing profile, training the AI with your previously edited Lightroom or Capture One catalogs, needing only 2500 images, or choose one of the profiles Aftershoot offers for free in their Marketplace. Its software will enhance your image, applying changes like color correction, white balance, exposure, among others.

Narrative: AI-Powered Intelligent Culling

Narrative takes a similar approach to culling by leveraging artificial intelligence technology. Much the same to Aftershoot, it analyzes your images based on factors like sharpness, exposure, composition, and facial recognition, then presents you with a selection of your best shots. While Aftershoot will give you what some consider "sneak peaks" with their Highlights, Narrative focuses a lot more on facial analysis and detection.

As for editing, Narrative recently expanded into offering editing features like basic exposure, contrast and color adjustments, though it still seems relatively basic compared to other editing softwares like Aftershoot or Imagen AI. The focus still appears to be primarily on their AI-powered culling to rapidly find your best photos.

Imagen AI: Automated Editing with AI

Imagen AI started out as an editing-only software; designed to automate various editing tasks using AI algorithms, but it now also offers culling features, although these are still in beta. It can analyze your images and apply intelligent enhancements, such as color correction, exposure adjustments, noise reduction, and skin softening. Just like with Aftershoot, you'll need to upload a couple thousand images to train Imagen AI's editing skills to edit photos with your unique style. Once the AI has learned your editing preferences, you can run a batch through its automated editing software, then hop over into Lightroom to review and refine the results if needed.

As for culling, the software will quickly scan through your photos, using AI to automatically filter them recognising closed eyes or blurry images, as well as kissing shots. One of the best features Imagen AI offers is being able to preview your images with one of Imagen AI's editing profiles already applied. Instead of just staring at the raw files, you get to see the final edited version could look like right from the start.

FilterPixel: AI-Driven Editing and Culling

Although FilterPixel may not be as widely known, it offers a couple of standout features that make it worth taking a look for those of us seeking new tools to speed up our workflow. Similar to Imagen AI and Aftershoot, FilterPixel uses AI algorithms to automatically enhance your images, applying adjustments like color correction, exposure tweaks, and noise reduction. However, FilterPixel also offers automated culling features, allowing you to quickly sort through and identify your best shots based on various criteria.

One particularly interesting feature of FilterPixel is its ability to create and train a personalized Culling Assistant, similar to how you can train AI editing profiles in Aftershoot and Imagen AI. By uploading your previously culled galleries, you can actually teach FilterPixel's AI to cull images just like you would. This tailored Culling Assistant then applies your trained criteria to automatically identify and sort your best photos, mimicking your own manual culling process.

Time to choose

Each of these software solutions caters to different needs and workflow preferences. Aftershoot and FilterPixel both offer an all-in-one experiences that combine AI culling and editing capabilities. However, it seems Aftershoot's features and capabilities are a bit more advanced overall and their subscription-based pricing could be a great fit, IF it aligns with your budget.

Imagen AI seems to be very reliable when it comes to automated editing powered by AI and their per-image pricing can definitely work in your favor if you're working with less images. However, it's important to note that their culling software is still in beta testing, so it may not provide the seamless one-stop platform you want.

Narrative has built a strong reputation as an AI-driven culling power-house, rapidly picking out your best photos. However, their editing tools are still quite limited compared to other solutions at this point, and that's something to keep in mind.

Ultimately, the choice will depend on factors such as your shooting volume, editing requirements, and personal workflow preferences. By understanding the strengths and capabilities of each software, you can select the program that best aligns with your needs as a professional photographer. Whichever decision you make, these tools have the potential to completely change your post-production workflow, freeing up time and energy to focus on what truly matters: capturing visually stunning photos.
